Elite athletes use their breath to “center” themselves for high performance. Whether basketball players standing at the free throw line or tennis players about to serve, they take a deep breath, then relax into their exhale. This relaxation into the exhale calms their nervous system, detaches them from fear or nervousness, and enables them to concentrate fully on the task at hand.
